There are four stages of mental mastery…
1) Unconscious Incompetence
In this stage, you don’t know what you’re doing and you don’t even know that you don’t know what you’re doing. This is the absolute worst place to be because if you’re here you have serious issues and don’t even realize it. Know anyone like this?
2) Conscious Incompetence
In the next stage, people start to have some awareness of their problems… they just don’t do anything about it. They either don’t care or don’t know how, but for some reason or another they just haven’t found a way to start conquering their problems.
3) Conscious Competence
This is where the magic starts to happen. With a little bit of hard work, a person in this stage has managed to start doing the right things. It’s still a struggle, but if you’re here, you’re on the right track. A person in this stage runs largely on motivation.
4) Unconscious Competence
At the peak of success mountain stands those who have achieved unconscious competence. They do the right things and don’t even really have to think about it anymore. This is where a person starts relying less on motivation and more on habits. Once you’ve formed the right foundational habits, success is largely on auto pilot.
Most of what we do is aimed at moving people through those stages as efficiently as possible. The first step is of course awareness… so take a moment and think about it… which stage are you in? Is it different for different areas of your life? Are you on stage 4 in your career but stage 2 in fitness? It’s always worth taking a few minutes to check where you’re at.
