66 Days to a New Habit

How long does it take to form a habit? 66 days according to a University College London study. The truth is that, depending on the habit, it could take anywhere from 18 to 254 days to form a new habit… but you can expect that somewhere in the neighborhood of 60 days is a great start.

So what’s the key to sticking with it? First, you can’t focus on setbacks. The more you stay on track the better, even if it’s not perfect. Second, you should realize that forming habits isn’t some magical event that takes place… it’s a long term process. Another great way to form a habit is to make it easy enough to manage. Let’s say you want to stretch for 20 minutes a day or do 100 pushups a day. By forcing yourself to stretch for 1 minute a day or doing even 1 pushup when you “don’t have time”, you can set yourself on the path to the habit you want. It’s all about progress.
